New High School/Middle School Wins State Approval
Congratulations to Winthrop Public Schools! The Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) has approved the Winthrop School Building Assistance Committee's preferred option of a new middle/high school project! By approving this option, we have now moved into the final phase of schematic design. Once MSBA approves the final stage of schematic design, it will then go to the public for a vote.

Please note an article in the Winthrop Transcript, published today, has given incorrect information stating that the project is a renovation with an addition. IT IS NOT. It is a new complex for the middle/high school. The Transcript reporter apologized for the error and informed the Superintendent that he will make the correction for next week's publication.

Winthrop Public Schools should take a moment and celebrate this momentous occasion as we are one step closer to a new middle/high school.

June/July School Building Assistance Committee Updates
The Winthrop School Building Assistance Committee recently received word that the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) increased our project’s base reimbursement rate for eligible costs to 55.63%, from 54.16% for the calendar year 2013! We are also pursuing 4 additional discretionary reimbursement points for: LEED (Green Building) 2 points, Maintenance Plan, approximately 1 point, and a Construction Manager –at –risk (CM‐at‐risk – Ch 149 A) construction delivery method, 1 point.

At the committee’s June 26, 2013 meeting, a motion to recommend to the Town Council that a ballot question for the school project be included on the town ballot in November 2013 was approved by the committee and forwarded to the Town Council for its action.

At the committee’s July 10, 2013 meeting, the committee reviewed materials and voted to instruct our project manager and designers to submit the Schematic Design Package to the MSBA by July 19th.

The HS video classes and WCAT have been helpful in recording our meetings and WCAT will be playing the recording of the latest meetings on channel 15.

The project manager and designers for our project will be presenting an update on the project and process at the Winthrop School Committee meeting on Monday, July 15, 2013. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. and is being held at the Cummings School Multi‐Purpose Room.

Scheduled meetings going forward for the School Building Assistance Committee include regularly scheduled meetings for August 1, 2013 and August 15, 2013.

Please check this announcement space for more updates on meetings and additional information as we develop our new and improved website!
